The Challenges of Growing Soybeans on Soybeans
As producers work to minimize production costs in 2018, many will opt for planting soybeans. Nick Tinsley, with Bayer Crop Science, says planting continues soybeans comes with some agronomic challenges, no matter what type of weather we have. “If you have a summer that is cooler and wetter than normal, you are going to have more problems with Sudden Death Syndrome,” he stated. “While, if the summer is hotter and drier than normal, you will face increased pressure in your soybeans from cyst nematodes.”
Tinsley says soybean cyst nematodes are one of the biggest threats to a continuous soybean crop, ”You can really begin to ramp up populations when you grow continuous soybeans because that is the only crop they will feed on.” He said these are all important considerations for growing who are considering continuous soybeans. He added that ILeVO seed treatment is the only product that offers effective protection against Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) and nematodes in the seed zone, resulting in healthier plants and higher yield potential.
Tinsley recommends that iLevo should be part of an integrated protection plan to insure good yields all season long, ”This is a very specific product that should not be used to replace your regular fungicide program.” Nematodes cause significant yield loss every year across all soybean-producing geographies. Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) causes more yield loss in soybeans than any other pest. Complementing nematode-resistant soybeans with ILeVO adds another level of protection that results in reduced nematode damage and increased yield potential.
In 6 years of testing with 337 comparisons, ILeVO provided an average yield increase of 4.7 bu./A vs fungicide/insecticide base with a positive yield response 84% of the time. The yield advantage from ILeVO increases with higher levels of foliar SDS symptoms.
