Farmers Having Trouble Finding Things to Worry About
For the past several years, mid-June has provided plenty of issues for growers to worry about, but that is not the case this year. Too wet, too dry, too hot, too cold are all issues that kept farmers up nights during June over the past few years. This year, however, is different. Andrew Ferrel, with DuPont Pioneer, says there is very little to worry about unless we get some adverse weather. “That would be about the only thing to worry about is a strong storm with 80mph wind,” he said. “With the corn growing so fast, we could see some brittle snap issues.”
Ferrel added that most of the side dressing and other field chores are done, “A lot of growers had time after they put the planters away to go back and do some side dressing, so most of the fieldwork has been completed.” He noted the exception is in parts of Northern Indiana where they are still wrapping up planting.
But, with the crop in close to on-time and good early growing conditions, some producers may do some late season nitrogen application. “We may see some of our more progressive farmers adding some nitrogen when the corn gets to the V12 to V15 stage,” he noted.
