Midwest Pork Conference Comes to Hendricks County on Tuesday, 12/4

On Tuesday of next week, pork producers, farm managers, contract growers, and allied industry leaders throughout the Midwest will convene at the Hendricks County Conference Complex in Danville, IN for this year’s Midwest Pork Conference. Stephanie Morris is the Director of Producer Outreach for Indiana Pork, who is hosting the event. She says the day is filled with nine educational sessions.

“Since contract growers are definitely growing in Indiana, we are excited to offer that track. We have topics that cover building maintenance, maximizing the value of manure, advocacy, and disease management.”

Other topics include reducing sow mortality rates and how to maximize the human capital on your farm.

Keynote speaker Eric Williams is a partner in the Indianapolis law office of Barnes & Thornburg, advising many clients in the ag industry.

“The title of his presentation is, ‘Gene Editing: Biotechnology Breakthroughs and Challenges.’ So, he is going to talk for about 45 minutes to an hour on the new technology of gene editing and how that can make an impact in the pork industry.”

The event also includes a tradeshow and multiple opportunities to network throughout the day. The conference is from 8am-3:30pm, but the Indiana Board of Animal Health has organized an hour-long post conference session from 4-5.

“That’s going to be great information for producers to come and learn specifically about African Swine Fever. That’s in everybody’s minds right now. Also, how to update your Premises ID numbers and make sure that your farm is prepared in case of a foreign animal disease outbreak here in the United States.”

The cost to attend is $80 for the first registrant from a farm or company and $60 for each registrant thereafter from the same farm or company. Various sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are also available.
