Scattered showers continue today, although the heaviest action has already moved through, coming through last night into early morning. Cold air will be nosing in through the day today, but generally, we think that most precipitation stays liquid. We will not rule out a few sloppy wet snowflakes before the action ends later today, but we do not think snow is a big story. Liquid equivalent precipitation for the balance of today will be from a few hundredths to a tenth or two. Later this afternoon we can see some lake effect snow in NW Indiana.
We should be dry but colder for tomorrow as we start the weekend and there will be some sunshine mixing with clouds. Clouds will be on the increase overnight tomorrow night into Sunday. There is some moisture that returns Sunday afternoon and evening. This time, we expect some minor snows, and can see a coating to an inch over about 60% of the state. Everything should be done by midnight Sunday night. Monday will turn out partly sunny and dry for Christmas Eve.
We are putting moisture in our forecast for Christmas day this morning. Models are still in disagreement, but we think there is enough of a surge of moisture to allow for this change. WE will see liquid equivalent of a few hundredths to half an inch, and we think that we will end up seeing rain in the far south, and likely some snow over the rest of the state. We wont rule out a coating to an inch on snowfall over about 60% of the state, but will take a final look at this again Monday morning. The map at right shows the set up Christmas afternoon. The moisture lingers in to early Wednesday before ending. We then get a lull for most of Wednesday and Wednesday night. Then a second wave of moisture comes for Thursday through Friday, bringing .25”-.75” of rain, which will spread over 100% of the state.
We end up dry from next Friday night into the weekend. However, we are keeping a few scattered snow showers New Year’s Eve Monday the 31st into New Year’s Day (minor accumulation) and then again for the evening of the 3rd into the 4th (a fresh coating in spots.)
