Indiana producers saw record breaking yields in both corn and soybeans, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.
Indiana corn production in 2018 totaled 983 million bushels, 5 percent over 2017. Corn acreage harvested for grain totaled 5.20 million, unchanged from 2017. The average yield of 189 bushels per acre was 9 bushels above last year’s yield and the highest on record.
Indiana soybean production totaled 346 million bushels, up 8 percent from 321 million bushels in 2017. Harvested acreage was 5.92 million, down slightly from 2017. The average yield of 58.5 bushels per acre was 4.5 bushels above 2017 and was a record high.
Nationally, corn for grain production in 2018 was estimated at 14.4 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the 2017 estimate. The average yield in the United States was estimated at 176.4 bushels per acre, 0.2 bushel below the 2017 record yield of 176.6 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 81.7 million acres, down 1 percent from the 2017 estimate.
National soybean production in 2018 totaled a record 4.54 billion bushels, up 3 percent from 2017. The average yield per acre was estimated at 51.6 bushels, up 2.3 bushels from 2017, but 0.3 bushel below the record yield in 2016. Harvested area was down 2 percent from 2017 to 88.1 million acres.
On December 1, 2018, Indiana corn stocks totaled 864 million bushels, 7 percent above a year earlier, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. About 69 percent of the corn was stored on farms. The first quarter disappearance was 244 million bushels, compared with 260 million bushels a year earlier. Soybean stocks on December 1, 2018, were 295 million bushels. That was 21 percent higher than stocks a year earlier and a December 1 record high. The first quarter indicated disappearance was 73.1 million bushels, compared with 98.5 million bushels during the same period a year ago. Farm stocks of soybeans were 190 million bushels. Wheat stocks on December 1, 2018, were 34.6 million bushels, 16 percent below a year ago. Ninety-seven percent of all wheat stocks were in commercial storage. Second quarter indicated disappearance was 6.39 million bushels, approximately 14 percent of supply.
Corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2018, totaled 12.0 billion bushels, down 5 percent from December 1, 2017. Of the total stocks, 7.45 billion bushels were stored on farms, down 4 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, 4.50 billion bushels, were down 7 percent from a year ago. The September – November 2018 indicated disappearance was 4.61 billion bushels, compared with 4.34 billion bushels during the same period last year. Soybeans stored in all positions on December 1, 2018, totaled 3.74 billion bushels, up 18 percent from December 1, 2017. Soybean stocks stored on farms were estimated at 1.94 billion bushels, up 30 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, 1.80 billion bushels, were up 7 percent from last December. Indicated disappearance for the September – November 2018 quarter totaled 1.25 billion bushels, down 20 percent from the same period a year earlier. All wheat stored in all positions on December 1, 2018, totaled 2.00 billion bushels, up 7 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks were estimated at 504 million bushels, up 28 percent from last December. Off-farm stocks, 1.50 billion bushels, were up 1 percent from a year ago. The September – November 2018 indicated disappearance was 390 million bushels, down 1 percent from the same period a year earlier.
