Indiana’s Corn Yields ‘Above Average’, Says Specialty Hybrids Agronomist

As the late Cincinnati Reds pitcher and broadcaster Joe Nuxhall used to say at the end of his radio and TV broadcasts, “We’re rounding third and heading for home!” The same could also be said for Indiana’s harvest this year.
So far, 71 percent of Indiana’s corn and 87 percent of Indiana’s soybeans have been harvested, according to the USDA as of Oct. 30.
Tom Manney, Technical Agronomist with Specialty Hybrids, says that corn yields are looking good for most farmers across the state given the heat and drought stress that most of Indiana experienced throughout this June and most of July.
“They’re actually settling a little bit above average for some folks, or in some places a little bit higher than above average,” according to Manney. “I don’t think there’s a lot of farms that are raising the best yields they’ve ever seen, but they’re doing very, very well on a tough year.”
Manney recommends evaluating your seed choices from 2022 and seeing what might make sense for the 2023 planting season.
“When Harvest is all done, try to sit down and take some time and go through your yield performance on your farm,” says Manney. “I recommend farmers go through, look at their hybrid performance, look at how those different hybrids did on different soil types and how they did in different parts of the farm.”
