So far, 56 percent of Indiana’s corn and 52 percent of the state’s soybeans have been planted, according to the USDA. Although, there are reports that farmers across north central Indiana are even further along with their planting progress.
“I would say on average we have more guys that are done than not done,” according to Eric Wornhoff, Field Sales Representative with Specialty Hybrids. He’s based out of Boone County and says most farmers are now wrapping up their spring planting.
“Our soybean crop is probably 85-to-95 percent in—and the corn crop is close. I would say among everything that’s planted, 75-to-80 percent of that is up,” he says.
With corn and soybeans emerging, Wornhoff says very few farmers between Indianapolis and Lafayette will be needing to replant this spring.
“I had to do a forecast on what my overall replant would be, and I’m guessing around two percent on corn to maybe three percent maximum. Those are just in limited areas,” says Wornhoff. “The soybeans are about the same way. They might be four-to-five percent because a lot of soybeans went in ahead of corn this year and they laid in the ground a little longer than we’d like. They still were very resilient and are getting out of the ground even though we had some cool temperatures during the end of April into the First of May. As soon as it warmed up, those things pushed on through for us.”
Wornhoff says it’s now on to the next phase of the season for Indiana farmers—which is protecting corn and soybean crops from stress.
“We’re going to start seeing a lot more pressure from pests and weeds here coming up,” says Wornhoff. “We’re looking forward to barreling through what we can control with seed treatments and environmental practices, and then whatever we have to clean up with the fungicides and herbicides, we can get this crop off to the best start we’ve had in a long time.”
