Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults, but a program through the 4-H Extension Office is helping seniors stay on their feet and confident.
The program is called “A Matter of Balance,” and it’s designed to reduce the fear of falling while improving balance, strength, and mobility.
“Were hoping to strengthen their physical abilities to balance better, strengthen some, maybe lower body weakness that they might have. We also do a lot of discussion around the fear of falling.”
That’s Kelsie Jo Muller, Human Development and Family Science Extension Specialist who says they not only focus on the physical aspect of falling but the mental as well, “So there’s a lot of research that shows when people have maybe experienced a fall, or they know someone who has experienced a fall, then they develop this fear that they might fall or fall again. And when that happens, then folks tend to limit their activity even more. And then, as you can probably imagine, that just increases their risk for falling.”
Through guided discussions, light exercises, and practical strategies, participants learn how to make their homes safer, manage fall risks, and stay active. The program also focuses on building confidence — reminding older adults that falls are not an inevitable part of aging. “A Matter of Balance” is led by trained facilitators and offered in a supportive group setting, giving participants the chance to learn from instructors and each other.
“There’s a lot of problem solving, a lot of discussion amongst all of the participants because they have their own life experiences. And typically, you know, someone will share, oh, this, I did this and this works for me. And so, they can kind of learn from each other as well.”
Local Extension educators say the program has helped many seniors regain independence and continue doing the activities they enjoy.
“Once you stop moving or you stop doing things, we lose the ability to do those things. And so, I encourage folks to keep moving, keep trying to do what you, what you can and, and don’t let that negativity sink in.”
