Whole Milk Is Back in Schools: Why Dairy Producer Nathan Kuehnert Applauds the New Law

If you have kids or grandkids in public school, they’ll now be able to drink whole milk again with their school lunches!

President Trump recently signed the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, which restores access to whole milk in public schools. It’s also a big win for America’s dairy producers.

“It’s a huge win for us. Ever since the Obama administration pulled fat out of the milk in schools, we’ve been screaming saying these kids need to have these healthy fats in their diet,” says Nathan Kuehnert, who co-owns and operates Kuehnert Dairy and Kuehnert Milk House with his family near Fort Wayne.

“Not only do kids need these healthy fats for brain development, but the healthy fats in milk also help with our children’s intake of the water-soluble vitamins that are naturally occurring in the milk,” says Kuehnert. “It’s a huge win for the Dairy Farmers, but an even bigger win for all the children in our public schools.”

He adds that Whole Milk is much more appealing to young kids for one very simple reason.

“Not to mention, it just tastes better,” says Kuehnert. “Now, kids are going to finish their milk at school, but then, if it tastes good, they’re going to go home at night and they’re going to ask for milk too. Milk is such an important part of our diets and there are so many health benefits to it. It really is God’s most perfect food!”

USDA officials say they plan to issue program implementation guidance to schools in order to implement the new law immediately.
