A program from Purdue Extension is helping Hoosiers take small steps toward a healthier heart.
“Be Heart Smart” is an educational program designed to teach people how everyday choices can lower their risk of heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States.
According to Extension Educator Linda Curley, “They can think about their lifestyle choices, their stress level, their sleep, what they’re eating, are they label reading, are they physically active? And we’re not going to throw it all at them at once. We’re going to talk to them about steps in the right direction, and to do what we can with what we have in order to live with less risk.”
Extension educators lead the program in communities across Indiana, focusing on practical habits like eating more fruits and vegetables, reducing sodium, managing stress, and adding more physical activity to daily routines.
Organizers say the program isn’t about drastic changes, but simple ones people can stick with long-term.
Curley continues, “There is a push in Indiana for us to help support folks that are dealing with chronic illness, and it’s a huge number and so this idea of prevention support is enormous.”
Participants also learn how to read nutrition labels, monitor blood pressure, and understand their personal risk factors.
Curley gives a few practical tips, “Do you know how easy it is to get out and walk and how great it is for you? This idea, too, of reading nutrition facts, labels. Simple label reading, you know, is important. How can we reduce our stress level? We also say that there’s opportunity for us to think about our everyday nutrition, not a fad diet, but what am I going to do to change my lifestyle for the better?”
Purdue Extension says the goal is to empower residents with knowledge and tools to improve their heart health and overall well-being.
