After Sixty Years, Syngenta Pulls the Plug on Paraquat Production

Syngenta announced it will stop producing the herbicide paraquat by the end of June, citing mounting pressure from generic manufacturers that have steadily chipped away at the company’s ability to compete in the market.

Despite its long history and effectiveness in controlling weeds and supporting conservation practices like no-till farming, paraquat has become a widely produced generic product—now registered for sale by more than 750 companies worldwide.

First introduced by Syngenta more than 60 years ago, the herbicide today represents less than one percent of the company’s global sales and is sold in only a handful of markets.

“This decision is about focusing our resources where they deliver the greatest value for our business and our customers,” said Mike Hollands, head of Syngenta Global Production and Supply.
