More Than an Algorithm: SeedIQ Combines AI with the Brainpower of Beck’s Agronomists

Beck’s Hybrids is known for their innovation and extensive research. Eric Pfeiffer reports now on a new tool that allows you to access to that research at your fingertips.

Through programs like their Practical Farm Research, Root Reveal, Silk Reveal, Kernel Reveal, and others, there’s just so much information available to farmers.

“We developed these concepts we believe very strongly that they are applicable to the farmer, but we’re like, ‘Man, that’s a lot for a farmer to understand,’” says Jim Schwartz, Director of Research, Agronomy, and Practical Farm Research at Beck’s. “So, it dawned on us: we have to create a tool that can assimilate all that information, plus a lot more, into a system that is very user-friendly. And that was the birth of SeedIQ.”

The artificial intelligence powered SeedIQ launched last month to bring together decades of research and real-world performance data into one easy-to-use platform found at BecksHybrids.com. It’s been met with rave reviews from farmers and Beck’s dealers alike.

“We test hybrids when we compare them against themselves. So, each plot that we do that, we get 18 data points relative to fertility— fertility rates, fertility placement, fungicide timing, and then populations. Put all that in—all our farm trials, all our research trials. Then we took our agronomists, our regional product specialists, and we sucked everything out of their brain, right? We made them talk for hours and hours and hours about these products. Put that into this tool, such that now a farmer can go in, ask five, six, seven questions, and it will create a recommendation for him based on his situation—based on his farm.”

Schwartz explains on last week’s episode of the AgBioScience podcast from AgriNovus Indiana that SeedIQ does not and will never replace your Beck’s dealer or agronomist, but this is just another valuable tool in your toolbelt.
