Congressman Jim Baird is out of the hospital after being involved in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday morning.
According to a social media post from Baird’s son Beau, the 4th District Congressman from Indiana suffered minor injuries. However, Congressman Baird’s wife, Danise, remains in the hospital in stable condition and is in the ICU after receiving broken bones in the crash.
Below is the Facebook post shared by Beau Baird:
“We wanted to share a quick update and, most importantly, say thank you.
“Dad was in the hospital for less than 24 hours and has already been discharged.“Thankfully, he walked away with nothing more than some road rash and bruising. We are incredibly grateful.“Mom remains in stable condition and will be in the ICU for a few more days as doctors continue to monitor her closely. She is receiving excellent care, and we are thankful for the medical team looking after her.“The outpouring of calls, messages, and especially prayers has meant more to our family than we can put into words. We have felt those prayers every step of the way.“God was absolutely watching over them.“Dad’s first comment after everything was simply, “God still has something for me to do in this world.” We believe that wholeheartedly.
“Thank you again for the love, support, and continued prayers for our family. They truly mean everything.”
ORIGINAL POST:
A hit-and-run crash is what sent Congressman Jim Baird and his wife Danise to the hospital Tuesday morning. That’s according to Baird’s son Beau.
“Because this was a hit-and-run, law enforcement is actively investigating and trying to find the vehicle that struck them. Our focus right now is on healing and recovery, and we appreciate the work of law enforcement as they do what they do best,” said Beau Baird.
Congressman Baird, 80, is responsive and in stable condition, according to Fox News. However, a source tells Hoosier Ag Today that his wife, Danise, was also in the vehicle and has several broken bones. She has also been hospitalized.
“They’re going to be OK, but they had a pretty bad accident,” said President Trump of Congressman and Mrs. Baird during his speech to a House GOP legislative retreat on Tuesday morning.
“Congressman Baird is in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, and he is extraordinarily grateful for everyone’s prayers during this time. Congressman Baird looks forward to continuing his work on behalf of Hoosiers,” according to a press release issued by Rep. Baird’s office.
Beau Baird issued the following statement following his father’s accident:
“Congressman Jim Baird’s vehicle was struck last night while he was driving back to Washington to continue his work for Hoosiers. My mom was with him at the time. I’m grateful to share that they are both safe, stable, and in good spirits. Anyone who knows my dad knows his determination runs deep, and he’s already joking about getting back to the House floor to vote, especially with margins this tight.
“The outpouring of support and prayers has meant more to me and my family than I can put into words. Please continue to keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. Jim Baird remains fully committed to serving his constituents, and that commitment has not changed.”
Congressman Baird, who lives in Greencastle, serves as Vice Chair of the House Committee on Agriculture. He has served in Congress since 2019.
Baird also has a life-long career in livestock agriculture. He graduated from Purdue University and received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in animal science. After serving in the U.S. Army and returning from the Vietnam War with a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, Baird earned a Doctoral degree from the University of Kentucky in monogastric nutrition.
