Inari Agriculture will permanently lay off 64 employees at its West Lafayette-area facilities following a company restructuring according to Inside INdiana Business.

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification was filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development on Jan. 20.

The biotechnology company notified affected employees of their terminations Tuesday, as required under federal WARN law. Employee separations will take place 60 days after notification, Vice President of Corporate Communications Emily Negrin said in an email.

In the notice, Inari Agriculture cited “changing business needs” as the reason for the layoffs. The company reported the reduction represents approximately 33% of its workforce. The company did not disclose the total number of employees affected nationwide or its total employee headcount in Indiana.

The layoffs are expected to be permanent, and the company said there are no bumping rights for affected employees. Bumping rights allow longer-tenured workers whose jobs have been eliminated to displace less-tenured workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Inari Agriculture operates facilities in Cambridge, Mass., where it’s headquartered. Employees at those facilities were also impacted by the broader restructuring, Negrin said. However a WARN notice has not yet been publicly filed with the MassHire Department of Career Services.

The West Lafayette facilities focus primarily on product development and the commercialization of crops using gene-editing technology, the company said. It also operates a site in the White County town of Wolcott, which is included as part of its West Lafayette operations.
