Beck’s Hybrids Chronicles Decades of Growth and Succession in New Documentary

Their story goes back to 1937 on an 80-acre farm in Atlanta, Indiana. Now, they’re the largest family-owned retail seed company in the U.S., and you can watch that story in their new documentary, A Home-Grown Legacy.

“I’m excited about all the things we don’t know about yet,” says Chris Beck, Facilities Project Lead at Beck’s Hybrids. “We’re going to pursue some things in the future, seek out opportunities in the future, but it’s all in the name of being committed to our purpose of honoring God and helping others.”

Chris is Sonny Beck’s grandson. Sonny is the company’s CEO and the family elder. That line from the documentary describes what this whole journey is about for Beck’s Hybrids and the Beck family.

“Faith, family, and farming,” Sonny told Hoosier Ag Today. “We’ve said that for years and that boiled down to, well we’re going to help others. What do we mean by that? Well, if you help others in life, you might not always make the most money, but you still did the right thing. So, we’re going to help farmers succeed. It is very true to what everything we do.

A Home-Grown Legacy takes you inside the history of the Beck family. It’s more than a company profile; it’s an intimate look at how one real farm family is navigating succession, rooted in an unwavering faith and dedication to helping farmers succeed. See how values are passed down, generations are prepared, and a powerful legacy is built on something bigger than the business.

In the documentary, they explore one of their old slogans- “Big enough to get the job done, small enough to get the job done right.” We asked Sonny if that still holds true after all the growth that’s happened for Beck’s over the years.

“Yeah, it certainly does. My wife reminds me of it every once in a while, you know, ‘Make sure we’re big enough to get a job done yet small enough to do it right.’ And we really focus on that all the time… It’s not just us, it’s all 1100 employees that have to buy into that and they do, that we are a small company still in how we look and the way we act, and we can do some exciting things.”
