Busy Week Ahead for Indiana Ag Policy

This week will feature two major events which are focused on the future of agriculture in the state.  One deal with grown of the agriculture sector within Indiana, and the other deals with how federal programs need to be shaped to help U.S. and Indiana farmers thrive in the coming years. On Monday, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture will unveil a new strategic plan for Indiana agriculture. Over 18 months in the making, the plan will outline the priorities for state government for the next decade. Input for the plan has been taken from all sectors of Indiana agriculture and from all the major farm and commodity organizations in the state.

ISDA director Ted Mckinney will present the plan along with Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, Indiana Farm Bureau President Randy Kron, and Purdue Extension’s Jason Henderson. The program will also feature a number of panel discussions by representatives of Indiana’s various farm and commodity organizations.   McKinney told HAT the plan will have 7 pillars that will help set the direction for growth of the ag sector over the next decade in both the public and privet sector.

On Tuesday, June 27, Indiana Farm Bureau will present an Ag Policy Outlook. This event will focus on national and state farm issues.   Bob Young, AFBF chief economist, will give his perspective on the health of the overall U.S. economy as well as the agricultural economy. Mary Kay Thatcher, AFBF senior director for congressional relations and a veteran of numerous farm bills, will give you the latest in issues and posturing for the 2018 Farm Bill. In the afternoon, a panel of Hoosiers will discuss two very important issues to rural Indiana: broadband and healthcare.
