Japan Enters TPP Talks

The Obama Administration last week agreed to accept Japan into the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade negotiations. Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns says this is great news for America’s ag producers – and he looks forward to building on progress with a Japan with a strong agreement that benefits the U.S. economy, farmers and workers. Of the 11 TPP countries – Japan already has free trade agreements with seven of them. Japan’s economy is second to China’s in the region and the fourth largest U.S. agricultural export market overall. Last year alone – U.S. food and ag exports to Japan totaled 13.5-billion dollars. The American Farm Bureau Federation is pleased with this decision to allow Japan into the TPP. National Pork Producers Council President Randy Spronk says the TPP is the single most important trade negotiation ever for U.S. pork and many other U.S. ag products with Japan on board.
